Entwicklung einer Methode zum Wirkungsnachweis resistenzinduzierender Präparate (Pflanzenstärkungsmittel) Organic Eprints
Marx, Peggy; Kühne, Stefan; Jahn, Marga; Makulla, Alexandra.
A method for testing the efficacy of products which improve the resistance of plants was developed in the Julius Kühn-Institute. The susceptible radish (Raphanus sativus) cultivar ´Saxa 3` was infected with Peronospora parasitica isolated in the field. Different plant resistance improvers (PRI) like plant or algal extracts were tested compared to aqua dest. as control and ß-aminobutyric acid (BABA) as a standard. PRI were sprayed twice on intact plants (BBCH 10: Cotyledons completely unfolded; growing point or true leaf initial visible). 24 h, 48 h or 72 h after the last application with PRI, the plants were inoculated with P. parasitica. 10 to 14 days after inoculation, the concentration of spore suspension from cotyledons was determined. The efficacy of...

Rau, Florian; Weier, Ulrike; Wonneberger, Christoph; Brand, Thomas; Jahn, Marga.

Rau, Florian; Weier, Ulrike; Krebs, Kurt-Ernst; Jahn, Marga.

Rau, Florian; Weier, Ulrike; Krebs, Kurt-Ernst; Jahn, Marga.

Hot water treatment of vegetable seed – an alternative seed treatment method to control seed borne pathogens in organic farming Organic Eprints
Nega, Eva; Ulrich, Roswitha; Werner, Sigrid; Jahn, Marga.
In future, conventionally produced seed will not be allowed for organic farming. Therefore, effective non-chemical methods are needed to control seed-borne diseases. Five important vegetable crops (carrot, cabbage, celery, parsley, lamb´s lettuce) and their most important seed-borne pathogens (Alternaria spp., Phoma spp., Septoria spp., Peronospora valerianellae, Xanthomonas spp.) have been investigated in laboratory, model and field trials. Hot water treatments were made at temperatures of 40 °C and 50 to 55 °C for 10 to 30 minutes, in some cases to 60 minutes. In most cases, seed health tests were conducted according to ISTA guidelines. In case of seed infestation with Septoria species and P. valerianellae, the number of spores or oospores were counted...

Improvement of seed quality of medicinal plants and herbs in organic farming Organic Eprints
Blum, Hanna; Fausten, Gudrun; Nega, Eva; Jahn, Marga; Gaerber, Ute; Aedtner, Ina.
As in vegetable growing or grain cropping the seed quality is an important factor for the successful cultivation of medicinal plants and herbs. In spite of intensive efforts made by specialised seed producers there are recurring problems with important quality parameters (e.g. germination capacity, emergence or seed health). The lack of sufficient study results is typical for special purpose crops, also concerning the particular host-parasite relationship and its methodical verification. Few experiences with the improvement of seed quality of medicinal plants and herbs are available. The intention of the study is to test physical and biological methods of seed treat-ment for their practicability in medicinal plants and herb cultivation. Fundamental...

Optimisation of different physical methods for control of seed-borne pathogens in organic vegetable production Organic Eprints
Jahn, Marga; Nega, Eva; Kromphardt, Carola; Forsberg, Gustav; Werner, Sigrid.
In the last decade, a lot of work has been done to develop new measures or to optimise existing seed treatment methods for use in organic farming. In the field of vegetable seed protection, national research projects as well as the EU-funded project “STOVE” (“Seed Treatments for Organic Vegetable Produc-tion”) are currently carried out. Among the physical methods, hot water, humid hot air and electron treatment are being investigated. All three physical treatment methods show clear reduc-ing effects on pathogens of infested vegetable seeds. Degree of effectiveness connected with a good com-patibility depends on the treatment method and on the host-pathogen-system, but also on the cultivar and even on the seed lot.

Saatgutgesundheit im ökologischen Landbau – Schwerpunkt Weizensteinbrand (Tilletia caries) Organic Eprints
Jahn, Marga; Koch, Eckhard; Wächter, Rebecca; Waldow, Franziska.

With the aim to evaluate the effectiveness of techniques and measures for control of cereal bunts and smuts in organic farming systems, field trials were carried out in multiple locations from 2004 to 2006. The relevant fungal diseases included in the trials were common bunt (Tilletia tritici), dwarf bunt (T. controversa), loose smut (Usti-lago tritici, U. nuda), covered smut (U. hordei) and black loose smut (U. avenae). The following treatments were found to be effective. Common bunt: different physical methods, Tillecur, acetic acid. Loose smut of barley and wheat: warm and hot water treatment, seed treatment with ethanol (more trials needed). Covered smut of barley: warm water treatment, ethanol, Lebermooser. Loose smut of oats: hot water treat-ment,...

Waldow, Franziska; Jahn, Marga.
According to the Council Regulation (EEC) No 1452/2003 since 1st January 2004 all plant material used for organic farming should have been produced under organic farming conditions. Seed-borne diseases tend to accumulate and develop into a problem after several multiplication cycles without adequate disease control. In recent years, contamination of wheat seeds with spores of Tilletia caries has become a serious problem for seed quality and yield. The objectives of this research were the determination of threshold values depending on cultivar resistance and the optimisation of seed treatment methods. For the determination of threshold values and the evaluation of effectiveness of seed treatments field trials were performed during two years at five sites...

Untersuchungen zur Wirkung alternativer Saatgutbehandlungen gegen Auflaufschaderreger in Getreide Organic Eprints
Waldow, Franziska; Jahn, Marga; Wächter, Rebecca; Koch, Eckhard; Vogt-Kaute, Werner; Spieß, Hartmut; Müller, Karl-Josef; Wilbois, Klaus-Peter.
Since all plant material used for organic farming should have been produced under organic farming conditions, and due to the generally occurring expansion of organic agriculture, the significance of healthy seed in organic farming is increasing. In a joint research project (2004-2006) the currently available as well as some promising methods and substances were tested and evaluated for their use in practice. Results of investigations concerning the control of pathogens affecting field emergence of rye and wheat by different natural products and physi-cal methods are presented. It has been proved that hot water treatment as well as several plant strengthening products (Tillecur®, LEBERMOOSER, Milsana®) and microbial products (Serenade, Cerall) can improve...
